Peak Oil Resources Review:

Some have referred to this book at the home wine-maker's "bible".  I could not be in more agreement.  Sure, it covers the basics of growing vines, tracking the ripeness of the crop and its suitability for wine at different times in the season, and the process of turning the grapes into what will hopefully be a fine homemade vintage.  However, like he did in Cellaring Wine, Cox instills his many years of wine-making experience in this book, offering his wisdom and guidance for your journey towards your debut homemade wine.

In Cellaring Wine, Cox's writing style was comfortable.  A similar presentation is found in this book.  He guides you through the entire process of selecting a vine through the bottling and ageing process.  This book is quite literally teeming with information and know-how.  The prospective wine maker will read it once through for a detailed bird's-eye view (if there is such a thing...) and then use it as an indispensable reference at each step in the process.

I have similar sentiments regarding this book as those I wrote about in Cellaring Wine.  You have the same sense of being let in on the great secrets of making your own wine... almost as though these secrets had been passed down through generations of your own family.  If your interest in wine is anything like my own, you will be inspired to find a source for your own vines and get planting.

Making wine is not overly difficult.  Making great wine that will elicit the "Ooohhhhs" and "Aahhhhhs" may be another story.  Like any art however, time and practice should coalesce to fashion you into a skilled vintner.  Start off on the right foot - buy this book.
