Peak Oil Resources Review:

There are a few books that deal with preparedness on this site.  That was one of the primary motivations for it's creation.  However, this is one the few guides out there that is specifically geared towards post-peak living and survival, and without being unduly voluminous.  There is a place for breadth and volume, although not everyone has the time nor motivation to get into such a level of detail.  Peak Oil Survival keeps it short and sweet, and it is a great starting point.

It covers a few key areas; obtaining and treating water, keeping food cool, and cooking, heating, and lighting.  All of these topics are well covered for such an abbreviated treatment.  Reading this book will give you ideas on these topics and it gets you thinking.  That is the point.  Most folks don't think and do not ask themselves the "what if...?" questions.  Peak Oil Survival helps to constructively guide your questions so that time is not wasted on improbable scenarios.   Each topic has enough "meat" to it so that understanding what is presented should not be a problem for anyone.  However, you may realize how little you knew about preparedness when you are done...

Two areas that were conspicuously missing were those that dealt with food and shelter.  I will make a few assumptions as to why.  Regarding shelter, there may not be a need to consider improvised shelter in the broader post-peak community.  There is plenty to go around.  The only circumstance that I could think of where this information would be valuable is in a refugee-type situation, where there is an exodus of masses of people that would have to travel sizeable distances without readily accessible structures.  The other missing section is on obtaining food.  I suspect that it is left out given the number of variables involved (geography, climate, etc).  Too many variables would detract from the simplicity of this book's message and it's information.  Besides, there are plenty of other books that do the food thing well enough.

In summary, these minor shortcomings should not dissuade you from obtaining this book.  It is chock full of handy info and guidance, as well as plenty of directions to resources if you want more details on particular topics.  McBay's writing style is comfortable and easy to read.  In fact, it won't take you too long to read this book, even if it is not a focused effort.  Peak Oil Survival is a good book to have around, and a great book to spread around.
