Peak Oil Resources Review:

The long-awaited review of Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills is finally here!  It has taken us much longer than anticipated due to the sheer volume of content in this classic and updated text.

Allow me to begin by saying this is my 3rd edition of this incredible book.  Some books you can do without having updated versions... this is not one of them!  You will absolutely want to include this in your library.

As the veritable bible of outdoor skills, Mountaineering treats every topic imaginable - from the basics of outdoor and climbing fundamentals, to rock and alpine climbing, to the ever important topics of emergency response and an understanding of the mountain environment - this book indeed has it all.

One need not be an alpinist to derive significant benefits from Mountaineering.  The fundamentals, and emergency prevention and response chapters alone have applications outside of the climbing and alpine environment.  That is because these are fundamentals.  How you apply them is up to you.  Personally, one of the coolest aspects of this book is that  it provides work-arounds, or backups, for when equipment has been forgotten or compromised.  For example, it provides instruction on implementing a carabiner break system for rappelling.  I have tried it - and yes, it works... always lots of fun to learn new techniques!

Since it is a penchant of ours to only choose the highest quality books to review, I could gush endlessly about Mountaineering.  If there is no other outdoor book that you ever buy, this is indeed the one that should occupy that vaunted spot on your shelf.  It comes with my highest praises.
